The World - on Mac by Vylen The World - on Mac by Vylen
Well, it took me forever to decide on what category to put this thing in. And I'm still not sure if it's right.

Anyway, this is a "working" 3D interpretation of the startup screen to The World:R2 found in the .hack//G.U games.

Working as in the camera movements are animated and so is the cloudy sky - this screenshot doesn't do it much justice.

I think it looks pretty good. And yes, this is running on my Mac - go Mac!

It would be nice if I can make it into a full-fledged game but I'm only one person. Well... we'll see what happens.

It's a work in progress for whenever I can find the time - which isn't often unfortunately. But, I really would like to keep working on it when I can!

Hiring people would be a bit of a stretch :P

This is just a personal project really, to keep my mind sharp... and I'm enjoying it. So who knows, it could end up completed without the need of outside help ;)

Sort of looks like Unity's Graphics Engine. I thought about rebuilding The World:R2 myself, but found myself rather uninspired to do it.

Ah, forgot to mention this in the description. This is running using the Irrlicht Game Engine. Free and open source, and multiplatform. Aside from creating this thing in XCode, no Mac specific code is being used, so in theory, I could put this on Windows or Linux.

Irrlicht is a great engine. I myself use the Unreal Development Kit, but that's limited to Windows unfortunately. They're working on a way to get it to Mac and Linux though. :D I prefer it because it's where I started level design and what not. It's got really impressive tools.

What do you use to build your models? And are you going for a "realistic" interpretation of The World, or are you going to splice in some of your own ideas? :D

I'm using Blender - best free multiplatform tool out there ;)

As for my vision of The World. Well, I would like to try go for a "realistic" rendition, mixed in with my own ideas :P At least, an expansion on what's shown in G.U.

But aside from how it looks, there's a lot of nitty gritty stuff in the backend to make things work that I really need to figure out first ;)

Ah, I use Maya myself. I have Blender installed, but I recently moved from Cinema 4D to 3DS Max, and from Max to Maya, so I'm still having issues.

I agree. My friend wants me to help him rebuild an old SNES game, Lufia 2, in 3d. Well, any of those games, if you do them as they are, the dungeons might look ok, but the towns will come out ugly. xDD Everything facing one direction... it's like, Why would you do this?! XD

Oh, I totally agree. It's like, I can make levels, but I have to delve into it, start messing with scripts and what not, and it's just something I don't want to do, but am going to have to figure out. It's a pain. XDD

Yea... I'm currently at the problem of how to organise and structure player characters in terms of files and classes and what everything will contain. This is the messy nitty gritty that's annoying. So many games out there can do it but I've gotta try figure this one out for myself, heh. And I want to do it properly so it's easily expandable in the future if it ever reaches that stage in the first place.

I'm a one man team here :P Coding, Modelling, Texturing, etc. This will take a while, if ever at all.

Haha, I hear you. Right now it's just a friend and I. He does coding, while I try to figure it out, because he's never on and never does anything, then I do the modeling, the texturing, the placing them all together... XDD So yeah, pretty much a one man team here too. I feel ya. :D

In a way yes. The camera just moves a bit essentially side to side. But the effect is "nice" - well, of course I'd say that :P And the clouds scroll by in the sky.
